n. a member of a Low-German tribe that settled in Britain in the 5th-6th c. Derivatives Jutish adj. Etymology: repr. med.L Jutae, Juti, in OE Eotas, Iotas = Icel. I{oacute}tar people of Jutland in Denmark JUTE n. 1 a rough fibre made from the bark of E. Indian plants of the genus Corchorus, used for making twine and rope, and woven into sacking, mats, etc. 2 either of two plants Corchorus capsularis or C. olitorius yielding this fibre. Etymology: Bengali jhoto f. Skr. juta = jata braid of hair
